Covid-19, an overview
Covid-19, is a virus belonging to a group of viruses called coronavirus. It was first reported in
the province of wuhan, China, from where it has spread worldwide causing what was decleared
pandemia by the World Health Organization on march of this year. The first case reported in
united states was around january of this year. World wide there are 10 million people affected
with ½ a million reported deaths.
In us 2.6 million people are affected with 12.800 death cases reported. In miami-dade more
than 35.000 cases have been reported, with a death toll of around 1.000 cases. In the state of
florida more that 146.000 cases have been reported with 34.500 deaths.
Common symptoms of presentation are: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, muscles and
body aches, headaches, loss of smell and or taste, nausea, vomiting diarrhea, inflammed legs,
runny nose. Most symptoms do occur between 2 and 14 days after exposure to the virus.
Diseases associated with this viral infection nvolve the lungs, brain, heart, kidney, liver. There are a number of neuropsychiatric diseases associated with this viral condition including: Cerebrovascular Disease (brain ischemia, hemorrhage), Depresion, Insonmia, Mental Confusion, Frustration, Anger, Psychosis, Dementia-like.
Though it affects all ages, people over the age of 60 are the most vulnerable group. It has been
reported that people staying in long term care facility has been particular affected with the greatest incidence of deaths. Minorities (african-americans, and latinamericans) are particularly affected by this condition.
Covid 19
People affected by the virus could be without symptoms, may have a mild, severe, or critical
condition.
Current recommendations by the experts in infectious disases are:
1. Social distancing.
2. Wearing facial masks.
3. Hand washing and using hand sanitizer.
4. Avoiding crowded places.
5. Look for medical advise if symptoms appear.
