Global agreement on pandemic prevention sought
The Intergovernmental Negotiating Body was convened from July 17 to 21 and met to forge and deliberate on an international instrument.
Ahead of the May 2024 Health Assembly, ongoing discussions continued among World Health Organization (WHO) Member States towards a global agreement on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.
From July 17-21, the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body was convened and met to forge and deliberate an international instrument.
COVID-19 made it clear that no single government can deal with future pandemics on its own. Therefore, the agreement would seek to ensure a long-term political commitment to establish clear tasks and procedures, guarantee public and private support, promote an approach that encompasses all levels of government and society, and integrate health issues.
The Intergovernmental Negotiating Body also elected Ambassador Kozo Honyo of Japan as Vice-Chairman of the Agency, replacing Mr. Taguchi Kazuho, also of Japan.
WHO also reported that the first joint plenary meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body and the Working Group on Amendments to the International Health Regulations (2005) took place on the evening of 21 July 2023 and the morning of 24 July 2023.
