Beyond the American Dream
A Dominican immigrant, Mary Fuster transformed her life from a New Jersey
entrepreneur to a leader in health insurance in Miami. Through her agency,
One Way Insurance, she promotes preventive healthcare and wellness.
In Miami, where stories of migration intertwine with dreams of prosperity, Mary Fuster stands as an inspiration for those aiming not just to survive, but to thrive. As founder and leader of One Way Insurance, a health insurance agency based in Doral, Florida, she empowers individuals and families, especially migrants, to access affordable medical coverage.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Mary arrived in the United States in 1996 for a vacation. A hotel management graduate with experience in herhomeland’s hospitality industry, her life took an unexpected turn when she met her future husband. They married in 1997, and she chose to stay, building a family in New Jersey. “I arrived as a professional, but here I had to start from scratch,” Mary recalls, facing language and cultural barriers that felt like starting life anew.
Undaunted, Mary and her Italian-descendant husband ventured into the restaurant business, inspired by family tradition. “His father said, ‘Open a restaurant.’ And I said, ‘Of course we can do it,’” she recounts.
They started with one business in a New Jersey town, expanding to four establishments over 19 years. This success wasn’t accidental; Mary spent
hours watching TV to learn English, attended classes, and stayed focused on clear goals. “This is the country where dreams come true if you work
hard and learn the language,” she affirms.
One Way Insurance LLC was registered in Florida in 2020, with Mary Fuster as the authorized representative. Based in Miami, the agency specializes in health, life, and supplemental insurance, gaining visibility through social media like Instagram @maryfuster96, where Mary shares tips on medical coverage. The agency’s Facebook page, One Way Insurance Oficial, promotes services with personalized support at 786-661-0944.
In 2015, a pivotal change brought Mary to Miami. Her daughter Alma, now 29, began studies at Florida International University (FIU). Determined to support her,
Mary sold her New Jersey businesses and relocated to South Florida. “God put it in my heart to move for my children,” she explains. Friends introduced her to the insurance industry, where she earned her license and found her passion. “It’s a wonderful world; it fulfills me completely,” she says.
As a health and wellness expert, Mary emphasizes the importance of medical insurance for prevention.
In Florida, her agency helps navigate subsidized options under the Affordable Care Act. “There’s a lot of misinformation; people think it’s expensive, but the federal government subsidizes up to 70%,” she explains.
Eligibility requires legal status, a Social Security number, and annual tax filings. One Way Insurance offers free assessments based on zip code, family income, and needs, covering primary care, specialists, hospitals, and medications.
A key focus is children’s health. “Kids are included in family plans; pediatricians, vaccines, everything is covered,” Mary details. For recent
migrants ineligible for the Affordable Care Act, she recommends private or tourist insurance. Her message resonates in Miami’s Latino communities, where preventive care reduces risks like costly emergencies.
Faith anchors her philosophy. “Nothing is achieved without entrusting dreams to God,” she says. In moments of doubt, she prays for guidance, viewing obstacles as preparation for blessings. This growth mindset aligns with wellness principles: mastering the mind, visualizing goals, and reinventing oneself. “Don’t
let fear hold you back; if God places it in your heart, pursue it.”
Mary actively participates in events like magazine launches and podcasts, connecting with beauty and wellness experts at venues like Better Beauty
Spa.
