Turning Dreams into Art

A story of passion and resilience by photographer Tumi Fernández

Turning Dreams into Art

Learn about the story of passion and resilience of photographer Tumi Fernández, an immigrant mother who works hard every day to build her dream.

“Since I was very young, photography has been part of my life. I grew up watching my mother with that passion for capturing moments; she always took photos of us and printed them as family treasures. Over time, in the Dominican Republic, I discovered I had the same sensitivity: every time I photographed my children with my phone, I managed to create images that conveyed something special,” Tumi shares.

“Upon arriving in Miami, life gave me an opportunity. I started working alongside actor Manu Cabrera, and I realized that taking photos wasn’t enough—I needed to refine my talent.

That’s when I decided to study photography and turn that passion into a profession,” the artista describes.

Tumi Fernández is the creator of TUMI PHOTOS, “a name that comes from my initials and my essence, because for me, every image is more than a portrait: it’s a connection with the soul.”

She describes her style as organic and emotional. “I always tell my clients: ‘let your soul dance so I can capture it,’ because my purpose is to capture those unique emotions in unforgettable memories.”

“Thanks to my marketing training in the Dominican Republic, I have the ability to understand what each client truly wants,” she assures.

Tumi has five years of experience, with only the last year dedicated exclusively to photography.

Despite her short career, she has completed over 400 photo sessions, including six magazine covers that she holds with pride.

She is a mother of two: Carla, who, at just 20 years old, through her effort and dedication, works as a paraprofessional in the New York City Department of Education, supporting children with special needs. And Lucas, only 11 years old, an honor student who, in 2025, received the President’s Education Awards Program President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence, a national recognition for academic excellence.

“My children are my driving force; I have to keep building and be an example of courage for them,” she tells herself. She adds that another motivation is to make her mother, Eddie Fernández, proud.

Finally, Tumi advises those who, like her, came to this country with dreams: “Don’t tire of fighting. Visualize your life in five years, study, take advantage of free platforms, learn the language, and above all, put your faith in God.

Because dreams do come true, and I am proof of that.” On social media, you can find her as: @Tumiphotos.
