Importance of the human touch in medicine

Interview: Dr. Idalberto Pérez

Importance of the human touch in medicine

An experienced physician highlights the importance of personalized care and empathy in modern medicine.
“In a recent interview, Dr. Idalberto Perez, vice president of Miami-based Yeshua Medical Center Inc. shared his vision of medicine and the importance of the human touch in patient care. With more than 40 years of experience in various countries, Dr. Perez highlights the relevance of the personal connection in the healing process.
The physician stresses that, despite cultural differences, the essence of the human being is universal. “In all parts of the world there are diseases and the process of health recovery begins with direct, face-to-face care between doctor and patient, to achieve important and core solutions.”
Dr. Perez stresses that while medicine has advanced enormously thanks to technology, the importance of human contact must never be lost sight of. “Nothing can beat a direct conversation with the patient,” he says. He adds that technology, while useful, should not replace empathy and personal connection.
In his long career, Dr. Perez has treated patients with a variety of conditions, including those requiring dialysis. This complex procedure, which demands constant and careful attention, illustrates the physician’s dedication to his patients. “During the four hours that dialysis lasts, it is crucial to be present, attentive to every detail. Any oversight can have serious consequences,” he explains.

Beyond technical expertise, Dr. Perez emphasizes the role of faith in the healing process. “Sometimes miracles happen in medicine, but they are not only the result of faith, they are also the result of our effort,” he reflects. “If we don’t believe in recovery, how can we move forward?” he questions.

Yeshua Medical Center Inc.’s program focuses on educating patients on how to live healthy, preventing disease and promoting wellness. “It is important for the population to understand that health is not only the absence of disease, but a state of integral wellness,” Dr. Perez points out.

According to the physician, there is a mistaken belief that the absence of symptoms exempts people from visiting the doctor. Despite technological advances in medicine, the doctor emphasizes that no innovation can replace the importance of the doctor-patient relationship. “Nothing beats a direct, personal conversation about health problems,” he said during the interview.

In Miami, where the pace of life can be fast-paced and stressful, this patient-centered view of medicine takes on special relevance. Dr. Perez reminds us that, ultimately, health and wellness are the result of a balance between the constant advances of science and humanity.
