In the cultural melting pot that is Doral, Florida, emerges the figure of Maureen Porras, a woman whose life trajectory is a reflection of the American dream in its maximum expression. Born in Nicaragua and rooted in Miami since childhood, Porras has woven a story of self-improvement and service, becoming a renowned immigration attorney and the current Vice Mayor of Doral. Her life is a testament to the transformative power of the immigration experience and an unwavering commitment to the defense of human rights.
Maureen Porras began in Nicaragua, a country marked by political and social instability. At the age of seven, she and her family embarked on a journey to the United States, seeking a future of opportunity and security. This early experience shaped her vision of the world and awakened in her a deep empathy for those who, like her, seek refuge and a better life.
Her vocation for service manifested itself at an early age. During her studies at Florida International University (FIU), where she graduated cum laude with a degree in Political Science, she interned with former Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. This experience gave her first-hand insight into the challenges faced by immigrants.
Her passion for justice led her to earn a Juris Doctorate from Florida Coastal School of Law, where she was noted for her dedication to her work and leadership in the Immigration Law Society. Her legal training, combined with her personal experience, made her a tireless advocate for immigrant rights.
Since 2008, Maureen Porras has dedicated her career to providing access to legal services to immigrant families, helping them navigate the complex U.S. immigration system. Her work is not limited to legal representation; she also focuses on community education and empowerment.
Her commitment to public service led her to take on leadership roles in nonprofit organizations. Since 2016, she has led organizations focused on human rights advocacy and humanitarian work globally, collaborating with agencies such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

In her role as Vice Mayor of Doral, Porras has been a strong voice for the rights of the Latino community, which represents a significant portion of the city’s population. Her experience as an immigration attorney has given her an in-depth understanding of the challenges facing immigrants in Doral, from uncertainty about their legal status to discrimination and lack of access to basic services.
One of the issues she has addressed most vehemently is the situation of Venezuelans in Doral, many of whom came to the city fleeing the political and economic crisis in their country. Porras has been an advocate of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans, arguing that their return to Venezuela would be dangerous and unfeasible.
“The city of Doral is not the same without the contribution of the Venezuelan community,” she has repeatedly stated. “They are businessmen, workers, families who have enriched our city with their culture and entrepreneurial spirit.”
In addition to his work in defense of immigrants, Porras has been a critical voice of the restrictive immigration policies of the federal and state governments. She has denounced immigration raids, the detention of families and the separation of children from their parents.
Her presence in the media has been instrumental in amplifying her message and raising awareness about the challenges faced by immigrants. She has participated in interviews and television programs, where she has shared her experience and expertise on immigration issues.
Maureen Porras is a leader who inspires confidence and respect. Her trajectory is an example of how the immigration experience can be an engine of social transformation. Her commitment to justice and her dedication to the community have made her an indispensable voice in the defense of immigrant rights in Doral and throughout the United States.
Her work as Vice Mayor not only focuses on immigrant rights advocacy, but also encompasses other issues important to the Doral community, such as economic development, public safety and quality of life.
In her personal life, Maureen Porras is married to Caleb Johnston, a Florida State Magistrate, with whom she shares her passion for public service. Together, they are active members of the Doral community, participating in organizations such as the Rotary Club.
